cleft lip and palate surgery alters the normal growth and development
of the jaws. For this reason, children with cleft lip and palate will
usually need orthodontic treatment to align their teeth in a desirable
relationship. This makes the orthodontist an integral part of the
craniofacial team.
Orthodontic treatment can begin as early as the first week of life, but it is generally deferred until 5-7 years of age. This article provides an overview of the orthodontic
